Makkah
Innā arsalnā nūḥan ilā qawmihi an andhir qawmaka min qabli an yatiyahum ʿadhābun alīmun
We sent Noah to his people: ‘Warn your people, before a painful punishment comes to them.’
Qāla yāqawmi innī lakum nadhīrun mubīnun
And so he said, ‘My people, I am here to warn you plainly.
Ani uʿ'budū l-laha wa-ittaqūhu wa-aṭīʿūni
Serve God, be mindful of Him and obey me.
Yaghfir lakum min dhunūbikum wayu-akhir'kum ilā ajalin musamman inna ajala l-lahi idhā jāa lā yu-akharu law kuntum taʿlamūna
He will forgive you your sins and spare you until your appointed time––when God’s appointed time arrives it cannot be postponed. If only you understood!’
Qāla rabbi innī daʿawtu qawmī laylan wanahāran
He said, ‘My Lord, I have called my people night and day,
Falam yazid'hum duʿāī illā firāran
But the more I call them, the further they run away:
Wa-innī kullamā daʿawtuhum litaghfira lahum jaʿalū aṣābiʿahum fī ādhānihim wa-is'taghshaw thiyābahum wa-aṣarrū wa-is'takbarū is'tik'bāran
Every time I call them, so that You may forgive them, they thrust their fingers into their ears, cover their heads with their garments, persist in their rejection, and grow more insolent and arrogant.
Thumma innī daʿawtuhum jihāran
I have tried calling them openly.
Thumma innī aʿlantu lahum wa-asrartu lahum is'rāran
I have tried preaching to them in public and speaking to them in private.
Faqul'tu is'taghfirū rabbakum innahu kāna ghaffāran
I said, “Ask forgiveness of your Lord: He is ever forgiving.
