عبس

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ ١

ʿabasa watawallā

He frowned and turned away

أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ ٢

An jāahu l-aʿmā

When the blind man came to him––

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ ٣

Wamā yud'rīka laʿallahu yazzakkā

For all you know, he might have grown in spirit,

أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ ٤

Aw yadhakkaru fatanfaʿahu l-dhik'rā

Or taken note of something useful to him.

أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ ٥

Ammā mani is'taghnā

For the self-satisfied one

فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ ٦

Fa-anta lahu taṣaddā

You go out of your way––

وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ ٧

Wamā ʿalayka allā yazzakkā

Though you are not to be blamed for his lack of spiritual growth––

وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ ٨

Wa-ammā man jāaka yasʿā

But from the one who has come to you full of eagerness

وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ ٩

Wahuwa yakhshā

And awe

فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ ١٠

Fa-anta ʿanhu talahhā

You allow yourself to be distracted.
