الليل

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ ١

Wa-al-layli idhā yaghshā

By the enshrouding night,

وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ ٢

Wal-nahāri idhā tajallā

By the radiant day,

وَمَا خَلَقَ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰٓ ٣

Wamā khalaqa l-dhakara wal-unthā

By His creation of male and female!

إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ لَشَتَّىٰ ٤

Inna saʿyakum lashattā

The ways you take differ greatly.

فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَٱتَّقَىٰ ٥

Fa-ammā man aʿṭā wa-ittaqā

There is the one who gives, who is mindful of God,

وَصَدَّقَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ٦

Waṣaddaqa bil-ḥus'nā

Who testifies to goodness––

فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ ٧

Fasanuyassiruhu lil'yus'rā

We shall smooth his way towards ease.

وَأَمَّا مَنۢ بَخِلَ وَٱسْتَغْنَىٰ ٨

Wa-ammā man bakhila wa-is'taghnā

There is the one who is miserly, who is self-satisfied,

وَكَذَّبَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ٩

Wakadhaba bil-ḥus'nā

Who denies goodness––

فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْعُسْرَىٰ ١٠

Fasanuyassiruhu lil'ʿus'rā

We shall smooth his way towards hardship
